Author abstract

Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) have opened new avenues for accelerating scientific research. While models are increasingly capable of assisting with routine tasks, their ability to contribute to novel, expert-level mathematical discovery is less understood.

We present a collection of case studies demonstrating how researchers have successfully collaborated with advanced AI models, specifically Google’s Gemini-based models (in particular Gemini Deep Think and its advanced variants), to solve open problems, refute conjectures, and generate new proofs across diverse areas in theoretical computer science, as well as other areas such as economics, optimization, and physics.

Based on these experiences, we extract common techniques for effective human-AI collaboration in theoretical research, such as iterative refinement, problem decomposition, and cross-disciplinary knowledge transfer. While the majority of our results stem from this interactive, conversational methodology, we also highlight specific instances that push beyond standard chat interfaces.

These include deploying the model as a rigorous adversarial reviewer to detect subtle flaws in existing proofs, and embedding it within a “neuro-symbolic” loop that autonomously writes and executes code to verify complex derivations. Together, these examples highlight the potential of AI not just as a tool for automation, but as a versatile, genuine partner in the creative process of scientific discovery.

Source reports
Selected source-authored cases report material model contributions within expert-directed theoretical research.
Does not establish
The collection does not estimate reliability, frequency, causal acceleration, comparative quality, or generalization.

Reported contributions

  • Selected small dimensions, proposed the valuations and epsilon, and generated the verification calculations without further interaction, according to the source.
  • Defined the task and search parameters, independently checked the arithmetic, adopted the result, and accepted section-scoped responsibility.

Material limits

  • The cases are selected; the full denominator of projects, prompts, branches, and abandoned investigations is unavailable.
  • The platform has not independently re-run or formally verified the calculation.
  • The example proves existence and refutes the stated inequality; it is not evidence about model success frequency or comparative research acceleration.
  • The full prompt, sampling settings, rejected attempts, and attempt denominator are unavailable.
  • The result does not resolve the tight approximation bound discussed by the source.

Contribution threshold. A model contribution becomes citable here only when it is material, specific, evidenced, adopted by responsible people, and accompanied by its validation state, limitations, and selection context. The model is not an author and bears no responsibility.

Eight mapped notes

Case notes

Each note separates the source-reported result, model role, human intervention, validation, access, and material warning.

3.1

Refutation

Online Algorithms: Submodular Welfare

A small counterexample is reported to refute a human conjecture.

AI role
Counterexample generator and calculator
Human intervention
Problem framing, search constraints, and independent arithmetic inspection
Validation
Author-reported human check of a fully specified mathematical instance
Access
Construction and calculations public; attempt population unavailable
Version-pinned source
passage:arxiv-2602-03837-v3:S3.SS1

Material warning. The instance establishes one mathematical refutation. It does not estimate how often comparable attempts succeed.

3.2

Review

Cryptography: AI-Assisted Bug Detection in SNARGs

Iterative adversarial review is reported to identify a fatal definition–construction mismatch.

AI role
Adversarial technical reviewer
Human intervention
Human cryptography experts isolated the decisive issue and conveyed it to the affected authors
Validation
Named expert review followed by author acknowledgment and revision, as reported
Access
Prompting process partly described
Version-pinned source
passage:arxiv-2602-03837-v3:S3.SS2

Material warning. The record supports a specific flaw report and response; it does not establish a general model-review reliability rate.

4.1

Proof route

Approximation Algorithms: Max-Cut

A cross-disciplinary measure-theoretic proof route is reported.

AI role
Interdisciplinary theorem retriever and proof collaborator
Human intervention
Source retrieval, dependency checking, and editing
Validation
Author-checked mathematical argument, as reported
Access
External theorem dependencies are named but not yet atomically linked here
Version-pinned source
passage:arxiv-2602-03837-v3:S4.SS1

Material warning. The source dependencies and division between model-written and human-edited reasoning require finer passage provenance.

4.2

Proof route

Computational Geometry: Steiner Trees

The reported proof uses Kirszbraun’s theorem after a problem de-identification treatment.

AI role
Cross-domain theorem identification
Human intervention
Problem de-identification, prompting, source checks, novelty checks, and proof review
Validation
Human mathematical checking, as reported
Access
Different model settings are described; earlier attempts are incomplete
Version-pinned source
passage:arxiv-2602-03837-v3:S4.SS2

Material warning. Problem de-identification is an experimental treatment that affects novelty, reproducibility, and contamination analysis.

4.3

Mixed result

Graph Theory: Computing Perfect Matchings in Regular Bipartite Graphs

A proved bound and research roadmap were later recontextualized by missed prior work.

AI role
Proof and roadmap collaborator
Human intervention
Verification, adoption, and post-release prior-art correction
Validation
Mixed: proved result, speculative roadmap, and external correction
Access
Novelty context changed in v2
Version-pinned source
passage:arxiv-2602-03837-v3:S4.SS3

Material warning. The proved result must remain separate from the roadmap; added Gurvits prior work materially changed novelty context.

5.1

Mixed result

Search vs. Decision in S₂ᴾ

An AI-integrated IDE is reported to draft a paper through eight substantive prompts.

AI role
IDE agent and proof drafter
Human intervention
Strategy, correction of an invalid assumption, verification, and release custody
Validation
Human-reviewed with linked supporting files, as reported
Access
Public files; transcript described as lightly edited
Version-pinned source
passage:arxiv-2602-03837-v3:S5.SS1

Material warning. Human authors retain responsibility. The invalid assumption and its human correction are material provenance, not incidental process detail.

6.1

Agentic search

Physics: Cosmic String Spectra

A model, tree search, and Python feedback loop are reported to find six analytical methods.

AI role
Branch-generating neuro-symbolic search system
Human intervention
Objective design, baseline construction, interpretation, and adoption

Access
About 600 branches and over 80% pruning are reported; the model is not publicly reproducible
Version-pinned source
passage:arxiv-2602-03837-v3:S6.SS1

Material warning. Rejected routes, code, tracebacks, selection logic, and public-model reproduction are needed to interpret the reported success.

8.1

Mixed result

Information Theory: The Courtade–Kumar Conjecture

The reported branches include complete, improved, partial, and incorrect results.

AI role
Proof investigator across multiple branches
Human intervention
Error detection, branch correction, and completion-state judgment
Validation
Heterogeneous and branch-specific
Access
A failed hypercontractivity branch is described
Version-pinned source
passage:arxiv-2602-03837-v3:S8.SS1

Material warning. The incorrect inequality branch is retained alongside successful results; validation belongs to each branch, not the work as a whole.
